History:

Halifax Airbase, a NATO airforce installation managed by the Canadians, was a major economic contributor to the community of Hügelsheim during the Cold War. The residential area near Halifax Airbase was known as Kleinkanada. The Canadians withdrew from Halifax in 1993, and the Airbase became the airport for the city of Baden-Baden.

Following the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, many Volga German families settled in and around Hügelsheim occupying much of the housing vacated by the departing Candian forces and increasing the population of the village from about 2,000 to over 5,500.
