Discussion & Documentation

Johann Michael Gossmann, son of Johann Adam & Agnetis Gosmann, was baptized on 21 December 1731 in the St. Stephan's (Sankt Stephan) Catholic Church in the city of Mainz, the capital of Rheinland-Pfalz.

Michael Gossmann, a farmer, and his wife Anna arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 22 Juy 1766 aboard the pink Lev under the command of Lieutenant Fyodor Fyodorov.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Göbel on 20 August 1767 where they are recorded on the 1767 census in Household No. 11.

The widow and children of Michael Gossmann are recorded on the 1798 census of Göbel in Household No. Gb03 along with a note that Paul Gossmann is working in the colony of Köhler.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Michael Gossmann came from the German region of Mainz.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Gossmann family among the Volga German colonies.
