Discussion & Documentation

Johann Heinrich Manz, son of Johann Caspar Mans & Barbara Schüssler, was born 11 May 1735 in Bodenhof, a village that is part of the Gersfeld Parish. He married Anna Katharina Hochgraber.

Heinrich Manz, a farmer, his wife Katharina, and children (Johann, age 8; Katharina, age 5¼; Barbara, age 3) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 20 August 1766 aboard a galliot named Catharina Eleonora under the command of Skipper Peter Rehder.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Frank on 1 September 1767. They and their 2 children are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 107.

By the 1798 census, they are living in Kolb.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Heinrich Manz came from the German village of Gersfeld. The 1767 census records that he came from the German village of Hirschfeld in the Freie Adelprovinz der alten Ritter [Free Nobel Province of Ancient Knights].
