Discussion & Documentation

Johann Georg Mützig was born in 1721 near Worms. He married first Anna Margaretha (surname unknown). They had six children, each baptized in the Catholic Church in Rheindürkheim just north of the city of Worms right along the Rhein River: (1) Johann Gottlieb, baptized on 5 July 1748; (2) Matthias, baptized on 28 November 1750; (3) Maria Katharina, baptized on 9 May 1753; (4) Peter Paul, baptized on 16 March 1755; (5) Johann Georg, baptized on 25 March 1757; and (6) Johann Jakob, baptized on 8 September 1759. About 1761, Johann Georg's wife died. He remarried to Anna Margaretha Reissenbaum on 7 March 1762 in Rheindürkheim. They had a daughter who was named Anna Maria, baptized on 30 June 1763; she died before 1766. At the beginning of 1766 they had another daughter, who was named Margaretha.

Georg Metzig, a farmer, his wife Maria Margaretha, and children (Johann Gottlieb, age 20½; Katharina, age 16½; Johann Paul, age 14; Johann Georg, age 12; Jakob, age 8; Maria Margaretha, age ¼) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the galliot Die Fortuna under the command of the Skipper Peter Stahl.

Georg Mitzig [sic], a farmer, his wife Margaretha Reisenbach, and children (Katharina, age 17; Georg, age 13; Margaretha, age 2) are recorded on the 1767 census of Göbel in Household No. 56 and son Johann Gottlieb in Household No. 55. They had arrived in Göbel on 20 June 1767.

By the time of the 1798 census, sons Johann Georg & Johann Gottlieb are still living in Göbel and are recorded there in Households No. Gb30 and Gb49 respectively.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Georg Metzig came from the German region of Worms. The 1767 census records that he came from the German village of Reidenheim [Rheindürkheim] in the Worms region.
