The history of a village in this location can be traced back to at least 1075 when Metzingen is first mentioned in documents. The cultivation of grapes and the development of a wine industry lead to the economic growth of the region around 1600. The textile industry developed in Metzingen in the mid-1800s.
The Thirty Years' War saw much destruction in this area.
Church:
The first known church building in Metzingen was built in the Romanesque style. The current Gothic-style hall church dates back to about 1500. It has a central nave and two side aisles. The height of the tower was increased to 57 meters in 1613 by Heinrich Schickhardt. The vaulting in the nave and side aisles occurred in 1873 under the stewardship of senior building officer Christian Friedrich von Leins. Most neo-Gothic elements were removed during the renovation by Manfred Wizgall (1962-64), but the vaulted ceiling was retained. An exterior renovation was completed in 1981, followed by the renovation of the choir in 1993 and the nave in 2004.
The first organ documented in St. Martins dates back to 1700. The current organ was built in 1979 by Friedrich Weigel. It was restored in 2008 by Michael Mauch. It consists of 3 ranks plus pedal.
