The earliest documented reference to Södel is dated 802.
By the second half of the 12th century, the family of Hagen-Münzenberg had established control over this area of northern Wetterau.
In 1496, a major fire destroyed much of Södel.
Today, Södel is administratively part of the municipality of Wölfersheim.

The first church was probably built in Södel around the year 800. It was the "mother church" of several parishes that developed in the area.
The church tower was rebuilt in 1615-16 according to a design by Johannes Reuss from Södel on the foundation of a previous tower from the 13th century. From 1617–23 the nave was widened to the north. In 1824, balconies were constructed.
The first organ was built in 1696 by the organ builder Georg Wagner from Lich. The organ pipes were obtained from Staden. A new organ was built by Johann Andreas Heinemann from Giessen in 1791. In 1871, Johann Georg Forster renewed this organ after renovating the interior of the church. New prospect pipes were installed in 1913. Since the organ pipes were melted down during the First World War, the organ building company Förster & Nicolaus from Lich had to use 58 new organ pipes. This organ was used until 1964 when a new organ was built by B. Schmidt from Gelnhausen.
