In September 1988, an archaeological excavation in northwest Steinbach came across several stone foundations dating from the Roman era.

In the Middle Ages, the Lords of Eppstein controlled this area. The last of the Eppstein line died out in 1535, and Steinbach passed to the Counts of Stolberg.

After the death of Johann Reinhard III, the last Count of Hanau, in 1736, Steinbach fell to the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel.

The oldest parts of the Protestant Church of St. George in Steinbach date to 1270. It belonged to the Archbishopric of Mainz.

The Reformation reached Steinbach in 1526 when the congregation became Lutheran. Many congregations in the region returned to Catholicism during the Counter-Reformation, but St. George's in Steinbach remained Lutheran. Count Philipp Ludwig II converted the area to the Reformed faith practice after 1595.

The first reference to its name as St. George's Chapel was in 1538.

A baroque expansion took place at the beginning of the 18th century from 1702 to 1721.

The tower clock was installed in 1871 by Ritsert & Söhne. It was restored in 2002.

In 1901, a thorough renovation took place. Further renovations took place in 1962 and 1987. A complete renovation and refurbishment followed in 2008-09.

A Stumm organ was installed in 1767. When the new organ was installed in 1834, the north balcony was shortened.
