Discussion & Documentation

Johan Hinr. Winckelstern, a cobbler (Schuster) from the area of Darmstadt, & Catharina Jürgenss from the county of Isenburg were married on 29 May 1766 in Lübeck. The marriage is recorded in the parish register of St. Jacob's Lutheran Church in Lübeck.

Erick [sic] Winkelstern, a farmer, and his wife Katharina arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 19 July 1766 aboard a galliot named Kronstadt under the command of Lieutenant Samuel Gibbs.

They are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Reinwald on 24 June 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 62 along with their 3-week-old daughter Katharina Elisabeth.

The widow and children of Emerich [sic] Winkelstern (sons: Nikolaus, age 30; Martin, age 16) are recorded on the 1798 census of Reinwald in Household No. Rw53.

Brothers Nikolaus & Martin Winkelstern are recorded on the 1811 census of Reinwald in Household No. 53 along with a note that they relocated to the colony of Katharinenstadt in 1800.

The death of Nikolaus Winkelstern in 1822 is recorded on the 1834 census of Ernestinendorf in Household No. 6.

The 1767 census records that Erick Winkelstern came from the German village of Gedern in the region of Stolberg.
