Discussion & Documentation

Stephan van Arkel was born in approximately 1786 in Rotterdam in Holland.

He served as a soldier in the 4th Artillery Battalion of Napoleon's Army. He fought against and was captured by the Russians.

Milovidov records that as of 1814 he had no surviving relatives in Rotterdam.

In 1814, he was settled in the Volga German colony of Anton. However, he is recorded on the 1834 census of Straub in Household No. 87.  The 1834 census also records that he died in 1816, apparently without heirs.

Milovidov records that Stephan van Arkel came from the town of Rotterdam in Holland [The Netherlands] where he had been a merchant.

There are no known surviving male lines of this van Arkel family among the Volga German colonies.
