Discussion & Documentation

Mattias Werschewen was born in approximately 1785, probably in France.  He served in Napoleon's army and fought against the Russians.  He was captured by the Russians, and in 1812, was settled in the Volga German colony of Brabander.

He is recorded there on the 1834 census of Brabander in Household No. 80.  His death in 1846 is recorded on the 1850 census of Brabander in Household No.95.  He does not appear to have had any male descendants to carry on the surname.
