Emanuel Grunauer, son of Abraham Grunauer & Ursula Roth, was born 22 July 1894 in Basel, Basel-Stadt Kanton, Switzerland. He studied at the Basel Theological Seminary, and served the Volga German parish in Katharinenstadt from 1820-1823.  From 1823 to his death in 1850, he served the parish in the colony of Messer.  He died 1 April 1850 in Messer.

His first wife was Friedrike Sophia Heller, daughter of Johann Adam Heller & Katharina Paulÿ.  His second wife was Auguste Karoline Cattaneo, the daughter of Thomas Cattaneo & Helene Christine Neitz.  Thomas was the son of Pastor Johann Baptist Cattaneo who was serving in Norka.
