Discussion & Documentation

There are two Brendel families recorded on the 1767 census that came from the German village of Reifenberg in Bassenheim.

(1) Johann Casper Brendel, son of Johannes & Anna Maria Brendel, was baptized 15 December 1718 in Oberreifenberg.

The baptism of a daughter born to Johann Casper & Apollonia Brendel is recorded in the parish register of Oberreifenberg: (1) Maria Anna, baptized 15 December 1750.

Kaspar Brendel, a blacksmith (Schmied), his wife Maria, and children (Katharina, age 18; Marianna, age 18; Philipp, age 8; Johann, age 4) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 18 June 1766 aboard the hooker Anna Catharina under the command of Skipper Adolph Scharpenberg.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Keller on 12 May 1767. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 7.

When Keller was destroyed, this Brendel family must have relocated to Neu-Kolonie along with other surviving families.

In 1790, Johann Brendel moved from Neu-Kolonie to Brabander.

Johannes Brendel is recorded on the 1798 census of Brabander in Household No. Bn51.

The 1767 census records that Kaspar Brendel came from the German village of Reifenberg in the Bassenheim region.

(2) Anton Brendel, a farmer, his wife Maria, and children (Martin, age 16; Margaretha, age 5; Maria, age 4; Elisabeth, age ¾) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 22 July 1766 aboard the galliot named Der Junge Mattias under the command of Skipper Johann Gottfried Selander. Anton's son Jakob, a blacksmith, and his wife Katharina were on the same ship.

Jacob Brendel, a blacksmith (Schmied), his wife Maria Katharina, and brother Martin (age 16) are recorded on the 1767 census of Dehler in Household No. 17. They had arrived in Dehler on 1 July 1767. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 17. [The rest of this family has not been located on the 1767 census.]

In 1788, Jakob Brendel and his family moved from Dehler to Brabander.

In 1797, Zacharias Brendel moved from Brabander to Preuss.

Martin's widow, Anna Maria, is recorded on the 1798 census living in Brabander (Bn51), remarried to the above noted Johannes.

The 1767 census records that Jakob Brendel came from the German village of Reifenberg in the Bassenheim region.
