Discussion & Documentation

Johannes Schmidt, a farmer, his wife Katharina, and children (Johann, age 14; Ursula, age 11; Heinrich, age 1¼) arrived from Lübeck via Reval [Estonia] at the port of Oranienbaum on 24 May 1766 aboard a pinque named Лапоминк (Lapomink - a Russian river) under the command of Lieutenant Dmitry Krykov.

Johannes Schmidt, a farmer, his [new] wife Margaretha [widow of Johann Georg Kessler], children (Johannes, age 12; Maria Ursula, age 12), and step-sons (Johannes [Kessler], age 16; Johann Philipp [Kessler], age 15) settled in the Volga German colony of Preuss on 12 May 1767. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 3. [See Kessler Family.]

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johannes Schmidt came from the German region of Mainz. The 1767 census records that this Schmidt family came from the German village of Oberursel in Kurmainz.
