Discussion & Documentation

Michael Schmidt, a farmer, and his wife, Barbara, arrived in the Volga German colony of Keller on 12 May 1767. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 38.

A Michael Schmidt, stonemason (Maurer) from the Pfalz, and his wife Anna Margaretha arrived arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 31 May 1766 aboard a galliot named Die Vergoldete Weintraube (The Gilded Grape) under the command of Skipper Joachim Hermann Andersen. This may be the same Michael Schmidt who settled in Keller.

The 1767 census records that Michael Schmidt came from the German village of Gross-Winterbach [?] in the Kurpfalz. There is a German village called Gross-Winterheim [Großwinternheim]. Further research is needed to confirm this location.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Schmidt family among the Volga German colonies.
