The parish register of Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Camberg records the baptisms of the following children born to Philipp Preuss, a miller from the Herrnau Mill near Erbach (a few kilometers north of Camberg), and his wife Anna Katharina: (1) Johannes, born 21 December 1738; (2) Peter, born 25 October 1741; (3) Philipp, born 4 July 1744; (4) Elisabetha, born 26 January 1747; (5) Sebastian, born 3 March 1749; (6) Johannes Adam, born 13 March 1752; (7) Anna Katharina, born 1 September 1754; (8) Nikolaus, born 21 August 1761; and (9) Anna Maria, born 15 October 1763.
Johann[es] Preuss, a single miller (Müller), arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 9 June 1766 aboard the ship Die Jungfer Friederika (The Maiden Friederika) under the command of Skipper Hans Christian Korsholm.
He settled in the Volga German colony of Preuss on 12 May 1767 and is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 1 along with his [new] wife Christina.
The 1767 census records that Johannes Preuss is the colony's mayor (Vorsteher), and it is after him that the colony took its name.
The 1767 census records that Johannes Preuss came from the German village of Camberg in Nassau.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Preuss family among the Volga German colonies.
