Discussion & Documentation

The parish register of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fischbach records the baptisms of the following children born to Johannes Jakob Fritz, a cobbler from Eppstein, and his wife Maria Katharina: (1) Mathias, born 29 September 1741; (2) Christina, born 8 October 1742; (3) Johannes Tobias, born 4 February 1745; (4) Georg Philipp, born 28 July 1747; (5) Johannes Philipp, born 22 January 1750; (6) Maria Kunigunda, born 8 August 1754; and (7) Johannes Andreas, born 22 September 1757.

Widow Katharina Fritz, a farmer's wife, and her children ([a] Georg, age 20; [b] Johann, age 18; Kunigunda, age 13) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 11 June 1766 aboard a ship named Der Junge Heinrich (The Young Henry) under the command of Skipper Heinrich Niemann.

Georg Philipp Fritz is recorded on a list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

[a] Georg Fritz (age 22), a farmer, his wife Maria Katharina (age 20), and his sister [not sister-in-law] Maria Kunigunda (age 15) arrived in the Volga German colony of Preuss on 15 July 1767. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 44.

Georg Fritz and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Preuss in Household No. Ps07.

Peter Fritz, presumed to be the son of Georg Fritz, and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Preuss in Household No. Ps08.

Georg Fritz and his family are recorded on the 1811 census of Preuss in Household No. 6.

Georg Fritz, son of Georg Fritz, is recorded on the 1811 census of Preuss in Household No. 6 along with a note that he relocated to the colony of Mariental in 1800.

[b] Philipp Fritz (age 18) is recorded on the 1767 census of Keller in Household No. 23 along with Gottfried Hahn. He had arrived in Keller on 12 May 1767. A note on the 1767 census records that Philipp Fritz is to be married to Margaretha Hahn, Gottfried's daughter. [This is believed to be the correct Fritz family because several other families arrived on this same ship that also settled in the colony of Keller.]

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that widow Katharina Fritz came from the German region of Darmstadt. The 1767 census records that Georg Fritz was from the German village of Eppstein in the Kurmainz region.
