Discussion & Documentation

Anna Maria Bartel, widow of Johannes Bartel, and her son Johann (age 5) arrived at the port of Oranienbaum from Lübeck on 9 August 1766 aboard the Russian galliot Strelna under the command of Lieutenant Sornev.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Norka on 15 August 1767.

Anna Maria remarried to Johannes Milling [Milgenk], but she also died. Surviving son, Johannes Bartel (age 6), is recorded in Norka on the 1767 census in Household No. 118.

Johannes [Bartel] is recorded on the 1775 census of Norka in Household No. 6 along with his [step-]father Johannes Milgeig [sic].

Johannes Bartel [errantly recorded as Barthuly] is recorded on the 1798 census in Household No. Nr166.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Anna Maria Bartel came from the German region of Mainz.
