Discussion & Documentation

Kaspar Steiger, a farmer, his wife Martha, and children (Katharina, age 15; Franz, age 12, Johann, age 10¼; Maria, age 6; Katharina, age 4) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 9 June 1766 aboard a ship named Die Perle under the command of Skipper Gerhardt Hermann Thomsen.

Orphans Katharina Steiger (age 14) & Franz Steiger (age 13), children of the deceased Kaspar Steiger, are recorded on the 1767 census of Leichtling in Household No. 36 along with the Bernhard Eder. The census does not record a relationship between the Steiger and Eder families.

Franz Steiger and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Leichtling in Household No. Lg46.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Kaspar Steiger came from the German region of Mainz.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Steiger family among the Volga German colonies.
