Gottfried Mai, a stonemason (Maurer), his wife Maria, and children (Gottfried, age 16¼; Johanna, age 12; Henrietta, age 9; Gertruda, age 6) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 9 June 1766 aboard an English barque named George under the command of Skipper Adam Bairnsfair.
Gottfried May [sic], his wife Magdalena, and children (Gottfr. Leopold, age 16; Johanna Louisa, age 12; Johanna Henrietta, age 9; Johanna Gertraute, age 6) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.
Gottfried Mai, a stonemason (Maurer), his wife Maria, and children ([a] Gottfried, age 16; [b] Johanna Louisa, age 14; Henrietta, age 9; [c] [Johanna] Gertruda, age 7) are recorded on the 1767 census of Kaneau in Household No. 5. They had arrived in Kaneau on 7 June 1767.
[a] Dorothea Elisabeth Gottfried née Hauck (widow of Gottfried Mai) and the Mai children (Andreas, age 21; Anna Elisabeth, age 18) are recorded on the 1798 census of Kaneau in Household No. Kn03.
Andreas Mai and his family are recorded on the 1834 census of Kaneau in Household No. 15 along with his half-brother Christian Gottfried.
The death of Andreas Mai in 1845 is recorded on the 1850 census of Kaneau in Household No. 23 along with a note that his son Christian Mai had relocated to the daughter colony of Rosental.
The 1849 census of Rosental records that the family of Christian Mai moved from Kaneau to Rosental.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Gottfried Mai came from the German village of Oranienbaum. The 1767 census records that Gottfried Mai came from the German village of Oranienbaum in the region of Dessau.
