Discussion & Documentation

Gottfried Mai, a stonemason (Maurer), his wife Maria, and children (Gottfried, age 16; Johanna, age 12; Henrietta, age 9; Gertruda, age 6) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax.

Gottfried May [sic], his wife Magdalena, and children (Gottfr. Leopold, age 16; Johanna Louisa, age 12; Johanna Henrietta, age 9; Johanna Gertraute, age 6) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Kaneau on 7 June 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 5.

The 1767 census records that Gottfried Mai came from the German village of Oranienbaum in the region of Dessau.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Mai family among the Volga German colonies.
