Discussion & Documentation

Heinrich Chevalier, a farmer, and his family arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 15 September 1766 aboard the galliot Adler under the Skipper Paul Adam Drath.

Heinrich Schwalje, his wife Elisabeth, and children (Johanna, age 17¼; Johann, age 15; Johann [again], age 13; Bernhard, age 3, died en route) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Brabander on 19 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 38.

Johann Chevalier and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Brabander in Household No. Bn13.

The 1767 census records that Heinrich Chevalier came from the village of Laplen (?) near Dofen (?) in France. [This location could refer to the village of La Plaine which was located in the historical French Province of Dauphiné (today, it is in Switzerland). Further research is needed to determine whether or not this is the correct location of this family.]
