Discussion & Documentation

Johann Strauch, a single painter (Kunstmaler), arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 September 1766 aboard a pink named Лев (Lev) under the command of Lieutenant Fyodor Fyodorov.

Johann Heinrich settled in the Volga German colony of Walter on 25 August 1767 and is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 28 along with his new wife Katharina.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Strauch came from the German town of Leipzig. The 1767 census records that Johann Heinrich Strauch came from the town of Leipzig in the region of Sachsen (Saxony).

There are no known surviving male lines of this Strauch family among the Volga German colonies.
