Matthias Hansel, a craftsman (Handwerker), and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Mariental on 14 June 1766. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 58.

The 1767 census records that Matthias Hansel came from the German village of Echternach in the Kurtrier region.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Hansel family among the Volga German colonies.
