Peter Mattern, a craftsman (Handwerker), settled in the Volga German colony of Schulz on 8 September 1766. He and his family are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 4 along with his mother-in-law Anna Maria (surname not recorded).

The 1767 census records that Peter Mattern came from the Russian city of Petersburg.
