Johann Matthias Bäcker, a farmer, and his family arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the ship Der Junge Heinrich under the command of Skipper Heinrich Niemann.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Straub on 12 July 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 42 along with the orphaned children of Andreas Heller. The 1767 census does not record a relationship between the Bäcker and Heller families.
The 1767 census records that Matthias Bäcker came from the German village of Ketternschwalbach in the Nassau-Usingen area.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Becker family among the Volga German colonies.
