Discussion & Documentation

Christoph Oswald, a single baker (Bäcker), arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 14 June 1766 aboard a ship named Die Neue Fortuna (The New Fortune) under the command of Skipper Ahrens Steingraber.

Christoph Osswaldt is recorded on a list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

Christoph Oswald (age 24), a baker (Bäcker), his [new] wife Elisabeth [Meckler] (age 22), and daughter Elisabeth (age ¼) are recorded on the 1767 census of Seelmann in Household No. 19. They had arrived in Seelmann on 15 July 1767. [See Meckler Family.]

Christoph Oswald, his wife, and daughter are recorded on the 1798 census of Seelmann in Household No. Sm41.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Christoph Oswald came from the German region of Würzburg. The 1767 census records that Christoph Oswald came from the German village of Waldenhausen in the Würzburg region.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Oswald family among the Volga German colonies.
