Discussion & Documentation

There are two Hertzberger families that arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 21 July 1766 aboard a koff named Alette under the command of Skipper Wybe Hendricks. Their relationship to each other, if any, requires further research.

(1) Johannes Hertzberg [sic] from Niederaller near Marburg & Maria Gertraud Bock from Niederaller were married 17 May 1766 in the City Lutheran Church of Friedberg.

Johann Hertzberger, a farmer, and his wife Gertrude arrived in Oranienbaum.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Dehler on 26 June 1767. Gertrude died and Johann remarried to Anna Katharina, the widow of Anton Trumm.

They are recorded on the 1767 census of Dehler in Household No. 33 along with Trumm's son Johann Wilhelm Trumm.

(2) Widow Barbara Hertzberger and her children (Maria, age 22; Jakob, age 15) arrived in Oranienbaum.

Widow Barbara Schneider is recorded on the 1767 census of Dehler in Household No. 40 along with a son Johann Georg [sic] (age 17). She is believed to be the above noted Barbara Hertzenberger, and Johann Georg is believed to be her son Jakob.

Jakob Hertzberger (age 46) from Dehler is recorded on the 1798 census of Brabander in Household No. Bn66.

The death of Jakob Hertzberger in 1803 is recorded on the 1811 census of Brabander in Household No. 67.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that both of these Hertzberger families came from the German region of Mainz. The 1767 census of Dehler records that Johann Hertzberger came from the German village of Hilst in the region of Kurmainz. The 1767 census of Dehler records that the widow Barbara Schneider came from the German region of Kurmainz.

There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.
