Asmus (Susannental)

There are two Asmus families that arrived together from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 12 September 1766 aboard an English frigate under the command of Skipper Adam Beerfeier. Their relationship to each other, if any, requires further research.

(1) Georg Asmus, a farmer, his wife Anna, and children (Maria, age 20; Katharina, age 18; Johann, age 16; Philipp, age 12; Karl, age 10; Peter, age 9) arrived in Oranienbaum.

Georg Asmus, his wife Elis., and children (Maria Sabina, age 20; Catharina, age 18; Phillip, age 16; Phillip Wilh., age 12; Carl, age 10½; Peter, age 9) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that son Peter died en route.

Widow Maria Elisabeth Asmus and her children (Margaretha, age 22; Philipp, age 20; Philipp [again], age 15) are recorded on the 1767 census of Susannental in Household No. 15. They had arrived there on 3 August 1767.

Philipp Asmus and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Katharinenstadt in Household No. Ka147.

(2) Philipp Asmus, a farmer, his wife Anna, and daughters (Maria, age 18; Anna, age 9; Elisabeth, age 6) arrived in Oranienbaum.

Phillip Asmus, his wife Maria Marg., and children (Maria Gertraut, age 18; Anna Maria, age 8; Maria Elis., age 6) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

Johann Philipp Asmus, a mason (Maurer), his wife Anna, and children (Maria, age 18; Anna, age 11; Elisabeth, age 8) are recorded on the 1767 census of Susannental in Household No. 16. They had arrived there on 3 August 1767.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that both of these families came from the German region of Hessen. The 1767 census records that widow Maria Elisabeth Asmus came from the German village of Hessenrheinfeld in Hessen and the Johann Philipp Asmus came from the German village of Springen in Hessen.
