Discussion & Documentation

There are two Gauland families that arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 21 July 1766 aboard a koff named Alette under the command of Skipper Wybe Hendricks. Their relationship to each other, if any, needs further research.

(1) Johann Gauland, a farmer, and his wife Anna arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 21 July 1766 aboard a koff named Alette under the command of Skipper Wybe Hendricks.

Johannes Heiland [sic], a farmer, and his wife Anna Regina settled in the Volga German colony of Bangert on 1 July 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 24.

Widower Johannes Gauland and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Bangert in Household No. Bg18.

Johann Georg Gauland, son of Johannes Gauland, and his family are recorded on the 1834 census of Bangert in Household No. 55.

The death of Johann Georg Gauland in 1847 is recorded on the 1850 census of Bangert in Household No. 79.

(2) Johann [again] Gauland, a farmer, and his wife Katharina arrived in Oranienbaum.

It is not known what happened to this couple after arrival in Russia.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that both of these Gauland families came from the German region of Mainz. The 1767 census records that Johannes Heiland came from the German village of Neustadt in the Kurmainz region.
