Discussion & Documentation

There are 3 Ruppel families that settled in the Volga German colony of Reinwald on 14 July 1766. All three of them had arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax. The 1767 census records that each of them came from the German village of Gedern in the Stolberg region. Their relationship to one another, if any, is not recorded on the 1767 census.

(1) Johann [Philipp] Ruppel, a farmer, and his wife Anna arrived in Oranienbaum.

Philipp Ruppel (age 29), a craftsman (Handwerker) and his [new] wife Elisabeth (from the German region of Durlach) are recorded on the 1767 census of Reinwald in Household No. 15 along with stepdaughters Margaretha Schulz (age 18) and Elisabeth Schulz (age 17). Orphan Georg Klinge is also recorded on the 1767 census of Reinwald in Household No. 15 with the Philipp Ruppel family. The 1767 census does not record a relationship between the Klinge and Ruppel families.

There are no surviving male lines of this Philipp Ruppel family.

(2) Georg Friedrich Ruppel, son of Jacob Ruppel & Gertrud Ruppert, was baptized 15 August 1717 [not 1716] in Gedern.
