Discussion & Documentation

Gottlieb Brestel [sometimes misspelled as Prester], a weaver (Weber), and his wife Margaretha settled in the Volga German colony of Shcherbakovka on 15 June 1765. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 18 along with two children (Margaretha, age 2; Johann Jakob, age 8-weeks).

Widow Margaretha and their children are recorded on the 1798 census of Shcherbakovka in Household No. Sv50 along with a note that son Johann Bernhard is working in Dreispitz.

One translation of the 1798 census records this surname as Brescher/Breschel, but subsequent census documents record Prestel or Brestel.

The 1767 census records that Gottlieb Prestel came from the German village of Beerbaum.
