Jakob Merl, a brickmaker (Ziegelbrenner), and his wife Barbara settled in the Volga German colony of Rosenheim on 27 July 1765. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 26.

In 1786, Jakob Merl and his family moved from Rosenheim to the Caucasus.

The 1767 census records that Jakob Merl came from the German village of Brakin in the Württemberg region.
