Discussion & Documentation

Michael Helske, a farmer, and his family arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 19 July 1766 aboard the snow-brig named Christina under the command of Skipper Jacob Stappenberg.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Brabander on 26 June 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 81.

The 1767 census records that Michael Helske came from the German village of Bernkastle in the Trier region.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Helske family among the Volga German colonies.
