Discussion & Documentation

Johann Philipp Hergert [sic], a farmer, his wife Elisabeth, and son Heinrich (age 12) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 22 July 1766 aboard a ship named Der Ringende Jacob (The Wrestling Jacob) under the command of Skipper Johann Heitmann.

Philipp Hertel, a farmer, and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Kukkus on 26 June 1767.  Philipp's unnamed wife died on 24 September 1767.  He and his family are recorded on the 1767 census of Kukkus in Household No. 42.

The 1767 census includes a note that the Hertel family moved to the colony of Bangert in 1768.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Philipp Hergert [sic] came from the German region of Baden. The 1767 census records that Philipp Hertel came from the German village of Sörth in the district of Baden-Durlach.
