Seibel (Walter)

The Seibel family resided in the German village of Herberts (about 3 miles southwest of Burghaun) prior to immigrating to Russia. The baptism and marriage records for residents of Herberts are recorded in the parish records of Burghaun.

Johannes Sippel, a linen weaver, married Anna Elisabetha Koch on 22 April 1749. Anna Elisabeth Koch, daughter of Johann Jacob Koch, had been born 18 July 1728. The births of five children have been located in the parish register of Burghaun: (1) Johann Conrad, born 27 January 1750; (2) Anna Margaretha, born 28 February 1751; (3) Anna Catharina, born 29 March 1753; (4) Anna Catharina, born 2 March 1755; and (5) Anna Elisabetha, born 14 June 1760.

Johann[es] Seibel, his wife Anna Elisabeth, and children (Johann Konrad, age 19; Anna Margaretha, age 17; Anna Katharina, age 15; Anna Katharina, age 12; Elias, age 10; Anna Elisabeth, age 7) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 13 September 1766 aboard the hooker Die Jungfer Dietrika under the command of Skipper Christian Korsholm.

Johannes died after arriving in Russia, and Anna Elisabeth remarried to Peter Walter. The combined Seibel/Walter family settled in the Volga German colony of Walter on 25 August 1767. The younger Seibel children are recorded there on the 1767 census as part of the Walter family in Household No. 1. Oldest son Johann Conrad Seibel is recorded on the 1767 census of Walter in Household No. 33.

The 1767 census records that Konrad Seibel came from the German village of Burghaun.

The spelling of this surname in the German church records includes Sippel and Sieppel. Subsequent generations in Russia used the spelling of Seibel.
