Jakob Hess, a farmer, and his wife Margaretha arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the galliot Die Furtuna under the command of Skipper Peter Stahl.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Göbel on 20 June 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 57.
The 1767 census records that Jakob Hess came from the German village of Sipsmar near Breitenbach.
