Leonhard Menges, a farmer, and his family immigrated to Denmark (Schleswig-Holstein) arriving in Flensburg on 12 December 1761. They were released from the Danish colonies on 10 June 1763 and joined the migration to Russia.

Leonhard Menges, a farmer, his wife Maria Barbara, and [step?-]sons (Georg Philipp, age 15; Georg Nikolaus, age 12; Georg Peter, age 12) [surname Fromm] are recorded on the 1767 census of Shcherbakovka in Household No. 42. They had settled there on 18 August 1767.

The Eichhorns record that Leonhard Menges came from Rohrbach, Amt Lichtenberg, in the Landgrafschaft Hessen-Darmstadt. The 1767 census records that he came from Denmark.
