Nieslein*

There are two Nieslein families who arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 16 August 1766 aboard a galliot named Die Wachsamkeit under the command of Skipper Jacob Heinrich Sager. Their relationship to each other, if any, needs further research.

(1) Georg Nieslein, a single man, arrived in Oranienbaum.

Georg Nieslein is recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

(2) Andreas Nieslein [published as Klein in Plehve's Kuhlberg list] and his wife Margaretha arrived in Oranienbaum.

Andreas Nieslein, his wife Margretha, and newborn son Johannes are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that Margretha and son Johannes died en route.

Andreas married Ursula, the widow of Thomas Herbstsommer. They settled in the Volga German colony of Hölzel on 11 September 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 10 along with his stepson, Johannes Herbstsommer and Michael Loch (age 7), the surving son of Johannes Loch. The 1767 census does not record a relationship between the Nieslein and Loch families.

Andreas Nieslein and his wife Ursula are recorded on the 1798 census of Hölzel in Household No. Hz18 along with stepson Johannes Herbststommer and his family.

The 1767 census records that Andreas Niesslein came from the German village of Portljaes [?] in the Bamberg region.

There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.
