Nikolaus Gabel, a stonemason, and his wife Margaretha arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 12 September 1766 aboard an English frigate under the command of Skipper Adam Beerfeier.

Nicolaus Gabel and his wife Catharina are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

The 1798 census of Schaffhausen records that he is from Susannental and living in Household No. Sh25 in Schaffhausen.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Nikolaus Gabel came from the German region of Mainz.
