Discussion & Documentation

Paul Schnautz, a barber (Friseur), and his wife Christina settled in the Volga German colony of Katharinenstadt on 27 August 1766. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 232 along with his stepson Gotthelf Hohmann (age 16). [See Hohmann Family.]

Paul Schnautz is recorded on the 1776 Katharinenstadt Grundbuch [Land Register] in Household No. 145 along with a note that he has been beurlaubt [on leave] in Moscow since 1776.

The 1767 census records that Paul Schnautz came from Mähren/Mehren/Meren. [This could refer to a number of villages with that name in Rheinland-Pfalz, Hessen, or Saxony.] The 1776 Katharinenstadt Land Register records that Paul Schnautz is from the German village of Brum Mähren.

There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.
