Discussion & Documentation

Two Schmidt families are presumed to be related because they traveled together and settled in the same colony. Their relationship, if any, needs further research.

(1) Theodor Schmidt, a farmer, his wife Maria, and daughter Barbara (age 1¼) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 26 August 1766 aboard a snow-brig named Die Jäger (The Hunter) under the command of Skipper Gabriel Will.

Theodosios Schmidt, his wife Maria, and daughter Barbara (age 1) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Hölzel on 11 September 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 27.

The death of Theodor Schmidt (age 69) of Hölzel is recorded on 9 November 1808 in the parish register of Preuss.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Theodor Schmidt came from the German region of Solms. The 1767 census records that he came from the German village of Buchhorn [Wochern] in the Lothringen region.

(2) Nikolaus Schmid [sic] & Anna Margarethe Hirsch were married on 1 June 1766 in Roßlau.

Nikolaus Schmidt, a farmer, and his wife Margaretha arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 26 August 1766 aboard a snow-brig named Die Jäger (The Hunter) under the command of Skipper Gabriel Will.

Nicolaus Schmidt and his wife Margretha are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Hölzel on 11 September 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 22.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Nikolaus Schmidt came from the German region of Trier. The 1767 census records that he came from the German village of Wochern in the Lothringen region.
