Jean Baptiste Giraud, a farmer, and his wife Anna Maria settled in the Volga German colony of Franzosen on 23 May 1767. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 1 along with a note indicating that Jean Baptiste was serving as the colony's mayor (Vorsteher).

The 1767 census records that Jean Baptiste Giraud came from the French village of Poligné.
