Christian Mattern, a gardner (Gärtner), his wife Maria, and children (Johann, age 19; Tobias, age 15¼; Friedrich, age 10¼; Susanna, age 9; Katharina, age 7) arrived from Lübeck via Reval [Estonia] at the port of Oranienbaum on 27 May 1766 aboard a pinque named Слон (Slon - Elephant in Russian) under the command of Lieutenant Sergey Panov.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Warenburg on 12 May 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 26.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Christian Mattern came from the German region of Darmstadt. They 1767 census records that Christian Mattern came from the German village of Butzbach in the Darmstadt region.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Mattern family among the Volga German colonies.
