Discussion & Documentation

Johann Peter Schmidt, a farmer, and his wife Katharina arrived from Lübeck on 14 August 1766 aboard a 2-masted merchant ship named Die Jungfer Frederika (The Maiden Frederika) under the command of Skipper Hans Christian Korsholm.

Johann Peter Schmidt and his wife Catarina are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Pfeifer on 22 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 101.

Georg [sic] Peter Schmidt and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Pfeifer in Household No. Pf04, but there do not appear to be any surviving male lines of this Schmidt family among the Volga German colonies.

Both the Oranienbaum passenger list and the 1767 census record that Johann Peter Schmidt came from the German region of Fulda.
