Gottfried Schmidt, a farmer, his wife Katharina, and children (Johann, age 9; Georg, age 7; Philipp, age 4) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 12 September 1766 aboard an English frigate under the command of Skipper Adam Beerfeier.
Gottfried Schmidt, his wife Catharina, and children (Johann Daniel, age 9; Daniel, age 7; Peter Heinrich, age 4; Elis. Dorothea, born en route) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Susannental on 3 August 1767. Gottfried Schmidt and his surviving sons are recorded on the 1767 census of Susannental in Household No. 9 along with his new wife Katharina and her children (Daniel, age 8; Elisabeth, age 7) whose surname is not recorded [but appears to also be Schmidt].
In 1790, Philipp Schmidt and his family moved from Susannental to Meinhard. Philipp Schmidt from Susannental and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Meinhard in Household Mn07.

In 1798, Gottfried Schmidt moved from Susannental to Bettinger. Gottfried Schmidt and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Susannental in Household No. Ss11.
Daniel Schmidt from Susannental and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Bettinger in Household No. Bt39 along with Daniel's brother Simon.
The 1767 census records that Gottfried Schmidt came from the German village of Taubach in the Fulda region.
