Discussion & Documentation

Johann Philipp Herdt, a single man, arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 19 July 1766 aboard the barque named Fortitudo under the command of Skipper John Scott.

He settled in the Volga German colony of Kraft on 18 August 1767 and is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 23 along with his new wife Elisabeth.

The 1798 census of Norka records the descendants of Philipp Herdt [one translation records this surname incorrectly as Kess] (sons: Joseph, age 25; Michael, age 19; Johannes, age 16) from Kraft in Household No. Nr015. Michael Herdt is recorded there as actually working in the colony of Warenburg.

Joseph, Michael, and Johannes Herdt are recorded on the 1811 census of Norka in Household No. 15 with a note that Johannes had died in 1799.

Joseph and Michael Herdt and their families are recorded on the 1834 census of Norka in Household No. 444.

The descendants of Joseph and Michael Herdt are recorded on the 1857 census of Norka in Household No. 477.

Ernest Herdt and his family are recorded on the 1857 census of Norka in Household No. 477 and on the 1857 census of Brunnental.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Philipp Herdt was a cobbler while the 1767 census records that he was a blacksmith (Schmied).

The 1767 census records that Philipp Herdt came from the German village of Pawlagua [?] in the Hanau region.
