Discussion & Documentation

Johann Adam Baumong, son of Johannes & Christina Margaretha Baumong, was born 1 March 1763 in Reichenbach.

There are two Baumung families that arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 8 August 1766 aboard a ship under the command of Skipper Heidemann. Their relationship to each other, if any, requires additional research.

(1) Johann[es] Baumung, a farmer, his wife Christina, and son Johann (age 4) are recorded on the Oranienbaum passenger list.

Johannes Baumung, his wife Christina, and son Johann Adam (age 4) are recorded on the Transport List from St. Petersburg to the German colonies along the Volga River.

They are believed to have settled in the Volga German colony of Hussenbach and therefore are the parents of Georg Jakob Baumung (born approximately 1767) who is recorded on the 1798 census of Hussenbach in Household No. Hs133.

Georg Jakob Baumung and his family are recorded on the 1811 census of Hussenbach in Household No. 133.

Georg Jakob Baumung and his descendants are recorded on the 1834 census of Hussenbach in Households No. 140, 216, & 230.

(2) Konrad Baumung, a farmer, his wife Anna, and daughter Maria (age 1/6-year) are recorded on the Oranienbaum passenger list.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that these two Baumung families came from the German region of Schönberg.

This family is believed to have been French Huguenot refugees living in Odenwald. The surname was Germanized from Beaumont to Baumong/Baumunk/Baumung.
