Discussion & Documentation

Johann Peter Matthias, a cobbler (Schuhmacher), his wife Maria Charlotta, and children (Katharina, age 5; Margaretha Elisabeth, age 4; Johann Michael Philipp, age 2-months) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum aboard the ship Die Vergelte Weintraube under the command of Skipper Anderson.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Keller on 12 May 1767. Peter was the only surviving member of the family, and he is recorded on the 1767 census of Keller in Household No. 26 along with his new wife Sibilla and son (Philipp, age ¼).

The 1767 census records that Peter Mathias came from the German village of Offenbach in the Isenburg region.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Matthias family among the Volga German colonies.
