Discussion & Documentation

There are two Dorn families that arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax. They both settled in the Volga German colony of Paulskaya on 7 June 1767. Their relationship to each other is not recorded.

(1) Wilhelm [Friedrich] Dorn, his wife Katharina, and children (Johann, age 5; Konrad, age 1½) arrived in Oranienbaum. They are recorded on the 1767 census in Household No. 54 along with his wife's mother Anna Kraft who had arrived with them in Oranienbaum.

Willh. Dorn, his wife Catharina, sons (Jacob, age 5½; Conrad, age 1½), and mother-in-law Anna [Kraft] are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

(2) Karl Dorn, a single farmer, and his mother Elisabeth arrived in Oranienbaum. Karl is recorded on the 1767 census of Paulskaya in Household No. 86.

Karl Dorn (age 21) and his mother Elisabeth are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that both families came from the German region of Darmstadt. The 1767 census records that Wilhelm Friedrich came from the German village of Ganerin [?] in the Darmstadt region and that Karl came from the German village of Genderkingen [?].
