Discussion & Documentation

Erasmus [sic] Eberling, his wife Maria Elisabeth, and sons (Friedrich, age 8; Daniel Wilhelm, age ¼) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 19 July 1766 aboard a pinque named Slon (Elephant) under the command of Lieutenant Sergey Panov. Based upon his age, it is possible that this Friedrich is a stepson and that his surname is Sagel.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Kraft on 18 August 1767. Zacchaeus [sic] Eberling and his family are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 41.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Erasmus [sic] Eberling was a farmer from the German region of Hessen. The 1767 census records that he was a weaver (Weber) from the German village of Sachsenhausen.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Eberling family among the Volga German colonies.
