Johann Betz, a farmer, and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Stahl am Karaman on 9 July 1766. Johann, his wife Katharina, and daughter Katharina (age 1) are recorded on the 1767 census of Stahl am Karaman in Household No. 11.

Widower Johann Betz, his daughter Katharina, her husband Christian Schneider from Philippsfeld, and their children are recorded on the 1798 census of Stahl a Karaman in Household No. Sk38.

The 1767 census records that Johann Betz came from the German city of Stuttgart in the Württemberg region.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Betz family among the Volga German colonies.
